Enhancing Aquaculture Management with Smart Data Loggers Project GROWPROBE2

This case study demonstrates how GROWPROBE2, developed by SEMPHOS for PEBL, leverages advanced monitoring to support sustainable seaweed farming by providing critical environmental insights for improved cultivation.

Challenge

PEBL needed a data logger capable of operating underwater for extended periods while collecting vital parameters such as light, temperature, current speed, current direction, and turbidity. The device had to store data for more than a month and provide seamless Wi-Fi connectivity for data retrieval. OTA updates were essential to ensure the system remained adaptable to future needs. Additionally, there was a plan for future phases to include a web server UI and onboard anomaly detection through a neural network.

Solution

Semphos Ltd. developed a tailored solution for the GROWPROBE2 project, focusing on creating a reliable data logger that met PEBL’s requirements. The key aspects of the initial phase included:

  • Custom PCB Design:Designed a water-resistant, robust data logger that interfaced with sensors to measure light, temperature, current speed, current direction, and turbidity.
  • Firmware Development: Developed firmware for data collection, SD card management, and efficient power usage, enabling extended underwater deployments.
  • Basic Data Retrieval: Implemented an interface for easy Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing seamless data transfer when the device was retrieved.
  • OTA Capabilities: Integrated OTA update functionality to facilitate firmware updates, ensuring continuous device improvement.

    Planned Future Enhancements

    Future development phases for GROWPROBE2
  • Web Server UI: A user-friendly interface hosted on the device to provide real-time data visualization and ease of use.
  • Neural Network Integration: Leveraging the ESP32-S3 platform for onboard inference to detect anomalies in sensor data, focusing on saving significant readings and enhancing data analysis for sea farmers.
  • Outcome

The initial phase of the GROWPROBE2 project equipped PEBL with a dependable underwater monitoring solution. This device allowed long-term data collection, giving sea farmers valuable insights into environmental trends and helping optimize their cultivation practices. The device’s OTA capability ensured it was ready for seamless upgrades, supporting future improvements and technology integration.
GROWPROBE2 is now available for purchase on PEBL’s website, empowering sea farmers with cutting-edge tools to improve their operations and support sustainable aquaculture practices.
