Secure IoT Device for Data Transmission Zoxcell Project

This case study demonstrates how SEMPHOS developed a secure IoT device for Zoxcell, ensuring reliable and encrypted data transmission to support seamless connectivity and enhanced security.

Challenge

Zoxcell required a secure IoT device capable of transmitting temperature and humidity data using cellular connectivity (2G/3G/4G/LTE). The device needed to include robust security measures, such as encryption using a secure element chip (Microchip ATECC608A), and seamlessly communicate with a cloud backend hosted on AWS or Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The project also required a user-friendly front-end for monitoring data and maintaining secure device authentication.

Solution

Semphos provided a comprehensive end-to-end solution, integrating hardware, firmware, and cloud services:

  • Custom Hardware Design: Created a dual-PCB setup using the TTGO T-call V1.4 development board (incorporating ESP32 and SIM800L modules) and a supplementary TMS board featuring an ATECC608A chip and DHT22 temperature and humidity sensor.
  • Firmware Development: Leveraged ESP-IDF v4.2 to develop secure firmware that supported GSM/GPRS communication via the SIM800L module and utilized the ATECC608A for secure authentication. The firmware published encrypted data to AWS IoT Core, ensuring secure transmission.
  • Cloud Integration: Configured AWS IoT Core for device registration and secure data handling. A ReactJS-based front-end dashboard was developed to visualize the data, incorporating AWS Cognito for secure user authentication.
  • Data Security: Implemented mbedtls for encrypted data transmission, ensuring end-to-end security between the IoT device and cloud services.
  • Outcome

    The secure IoT device designed by Semphos enabled Zoxcell to achieve reliable and secure data transmission for temperature and humidity monitoring. The inclusion of a secure element chip ensured robust encryption and secure device authentication. The cloud integration and user-friendly dashboard allowed for easy data access and visualization, providing a scalable and secure solution for future deployments.
